Preparing your home for a new puppy

Bringing a new purebred puppy into your home is an exciting time, filled with joy and anticipation. However, it's essential to prepare your home to ensure a smooth transition and a safe, comfortable environment for your new furry family member. In this post, we'll walk you through the steps you need to take to get your home ready for the arrival of your purebred puppy from Perfect Pedigree Thailand.

Puppy-Proofing Your Home

Just like you would with a baby, it's crucial to puppy-proof your home to prevent accidents and keep your new pet safe. Here are some steps you can take to make your home more secure:
  • Store chemicals, cleaning supplies, and medications out of reach or in locked cabinets.
  • Cover electrical outlets and secure loose wires.
  • Remove small objects that could be choking hazards.
  • Block off any areas where your puppy could get stuck or injured, such as open staircases or balconies.
  • Set up baby gates to restrict access to certain rooms, if necessary.

Designate a Puppy Space

Creating a designated space for your puppy will help them feel secure and comfortable in their new environment. Set up a comfortable bed or crate, along with their food and water bowls, toys, and a designated area for potty training. This will become their "safe zone" where they can retreat when they feel overwhelmed or need a rest.

Stock Up on Supplies

Before bringing your purebred puppy home, ensure you have all the necessary supplies on hand, including:
  • High-quality puppy food
  • Food and water bowls
  • Collar and leash
  • Toys and chews
  • Grooming supplies (brush, nail clippers, etc.)
  • Crate or bed
  • Potty training pads or a designated outdoor potty area
  • Puppy training treats

Prepare your kitchen

Foods that are toxic to dogs such as onions, grapes and chocolate should be kept out of reach at all times. Research what foods dogs cannot eat and make sure all of your family members are familiar with these foods. Keep your counters, surfaces and table clean to prevent unwanted attention, investigation and "counter-surfing" by curious puppies following a scent. Make sure rubbish bins are out of reach or can be secured to prevent a big clean up!

Prepare your common areas

Stairs and balconies are particular areas to be aware of. Puppy gates are inexpensive and convenient to protect your puppy from danger zones. A playpen is also a very good idea to limit their roaming ability. Plants, cables and chewable items should be kept off the floor. Bitter sprays can be purchased from the pet shop to prevent chewing on furniture.

Prepare your bedrooms

Puppies will chew on anything given a chance! Pay particular attention to small items such as jewellery which might present a choking hazard. Also make sure all charging and other cables are kept out of reach. Puppies love to chew on slippers and shoes, beware!

Prepare your bathrooms

Child-proof locks are a good idea for bathrooms. If this is not possible or practical, make sure that puppies do not have access to dangerous bathroom chemicals and cleaning agents.
Prepare your garden for a new puppy

Prepare your outdoor areas

Try not to use any toxic pesticides. Be sure to mention that you have pets if ever fumigating of public areas is carried out. Ensure that there are no holes, gaps or spaces in fences where your puppy might escape if left unattended!

Conclusion

Preparing your home for a new purebred puppy takes a little time, effort, and careful planning. By following these steps, you can create a safe and welcoming environment that sets the foundation for a lifetime of love and companionship.
